All of the wooden planks and timber pieces that were collected over the winter months from the beach were removed by the Briggs Team from the Hour Glass Museum on May 2nd for measurement, drawings, photography, and analysis.
On May 7th, the process began with an inventory and examination of each piece. Over the summer months the team will continue working on the timber until they determine the construction techniques used to fit each piece to the boat. We believe there will be invaluable information taken from the analysis of this wood.
A special camera rig called the Bird House has been built by the team to take a continuous series of digital images of each piece of timber. The individual photographs will then be "stitched" together by computer forming a composite image (photomosaic). The detailed printouts will then be turned into drawings that can be used in the final report.
Photography will begin the week of May 21st.
The timber will be returned to the Hour Glass upon completion of the work this summer.
Thanks again to all of you who picked up the timber from the wreck site and turned it into the Society. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Plans are also being made now to design, build, and assemble special equipment that will be needed to aid in the excavation process. This gear will help to keep sand and water out of the work area. |
